Get paid while you’re off work — California’s PFL pays 70–90% of your wages (up to $1,765/week) for up to 8 weeks for family care or bonding. SDI pays 70–90% (up to $1,681/week) for up to 52 weeks for your own medical condition. Federal FMLA alone is completely unpaid.
Your job is protected even at small companies — California’s CFRA covers employers with just 5 or more employees. Federal FMLA requires 50+. That means millions more California workers have job-protected leave than in most states.
Stack programs for maximum coverage — You can use FMLA/CFRA (job protection) + PFL (family care wages) + SDI (disability wages) at the same time. They run concurrently, giving you both protections without extending your absence.

Your employer must have 5+ employees for CFRA coverage or 50+ employees within 75 miles of your worksite for federal FMLA coverage
You must have worked for your current employer for at least 12 months. The months don’t have to be consecutive breaks in service count as long as total tenure reaches 12 months.
That’s roughly 24 hours per week. If you work full-time, you almost certainly meet this requirement.
PFL and SDI have NO employer size or tenure requirements. If you’ve earned $300 or more and paid into the SDI fund through payroll deductions, you’re likely eligible, even if you don’t qualify for FMLA or CFRA.
California has five overlapping leave programs: FMLA, CFRA, PFL, SDI, and PDL, each with different forms, eligibility rules, and benefits. One mistake can delay your wages or void your job protection.
Our California-licensed physicians understand how these programs interact. We complete the correct forms for your situation, document your condition to satisfy both your employer and the EDD, and help you maximize your total leave time and wage replacement.
Your employer cannot force you to use PTO while receiving PFL or SDI benefits (DOL 2025 guidance). We help you understand these rights so you keep more of your accrued time off.

CFRA covers employers with just 5+ employees. Federal FMLA requires 50+. If you work for a smaller California company, you still have job-protected leave rights that most workers in other states don’t.
California’s Paid Family Leave program pays 70–90% of your wages (sliding scale — lower earners get a higher percentage) up to $1,765 per week for up to 8 weeks. Available for bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill family member.
CFRA covers your spouse, child, parent, domestic partner, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, and sibling. Federal FMLA only covers spouse, child, and parent. California recognizes that family doesn’t stop at the nuclear level.
Pregnant employees get up to 4 months of PDL for pregnancy-related conditions, then 12 weeks of CFRA for bonding. SDI pays your wages during both. That’s up to 7 months of job-protected, partially-paid leave.
California’s State Disability Insurance pays 70–90% of your wages (up to $1,681/week) for up to 52 weeks when you can’t work due to illness, injury, pregnancy, or mental health conditions. No other state offers disability coverage this long.
Our California-licensed physicians certify you for FMLA and CFRA, and provide medical documentation to support your PFL and SDI applications, all in a single video visit. Most certifications completed within 24 hours.
Now that you understand California's family leave programs, the next step is getting certified. California residents have more leave protections than workers in any other state. Our California-licensed physicians help you get certified for FMLA/CFRA and provide documentation for PFL and SDI, so you get the maximum time off and wage replacement you’re entitled to.
