Minnesota's New Paid Leave Program: What You Need to Know

Minnesota launched its PFML program in January 2026. Many workers don't know about it yet — which means people are missing out on benefits while they're stressed about lost income. If you've been paying into the program through payroll deductions, here's what you can access:

20 weeks of combined paid leave

Minnesota PFML provides up to 12 weeks for your own medical condition and up to 12 weeks for family leave, with a combined maximum of 20 weeks per benefit year. That's 8 weeks more than federal FMLA's 12 weeks — and one of the more generous combined caps in the country, second only to Massachusetts (26 weeks).

Three-tier wage replacement: 90%, 66%, and 55%

Minnesota uses a progressive formula: 90% on the first tier of wages, 66% on the middle tier, and 55% on the highest tier. Maximum benefit: approximately $1,372/week. Lower earners see close to 90% replacement. Higher earners still get a solid benefit, just at a lower percentage on income above the thresholds.

Brand new — many workers don't know about it yet

This program just launched in January 2026. If you work in Minnesota and need time off for a health condition, you may have access to paid leave you didn't have a year ago. Don't leave money on the table because the program is new and unfamiliar.

How Do I Know If I'm Eligible?

Minnesota's new PFML covers most workers. Here's how eligibility works:

Federal FMLA: 50+ employees, 12 months, 1,250 hours

Standard federal FMLA requires your employer to have 50+ employees within 75 miles, 12+ months tenure, and 1,250+ hours worked in the past year.

MN PFML: Earnings-based, most workers qualify

If you've earned wages in Minnesota and had PFML payroll deductions, you likely qualify. The program covers most employees regardless of employer size. Funded through a shared 0.88% payroll contribution split 50/50 between employees and employers.

FMLA + PFML run concurrently

If you qualify for both, FMLA protects your job while PFML pays your wages. They run at the same time — the 12-week FMLA job protection period overlaps with your PFML benefits. After FMLA's 12 weeks end, PFML may continue paying for up to 8 additional weeks.

First year: check your payroll stubs

Since the program just launched, verify that your employer is withholding PFML contributions. If you see the deduction on your pay stub, you're building eligibility. If you don't, talk to your HR department.

How Trust Medical Ensures Your Forms Are Minnesota-Compliant

Minnesota's PFML program is brand new, which means many employers and HR departments are still learning the process. That creates extra risk for workers filing claims: unfamiliar forms, unclear documentation standards, and a lack of institutional knowledge.

Our Minnesota-licensed physicians complete your FMLA certification and provide the medical documentation needed for your PFML application. We stay current on the new program's requirements so your claim is filed correctly from the start — even if your employer's HR team hasn't processed many PFML claims yet.

In most cases, your employer cannot require you to use PTO while you're receiving PFML benefits. We help you understand your rights under both federal and Minnesota law.

Minnesota Leave Laws & Your Rights Explained

20 weeks combined — among the most generous

Minnesota PFML provides up to 12 weeks medical + 12 weeks family, capped at 20 weeks combined per benefit year. Only Massachusetts (26 weeks) and Washington (18 weeks) offer comparable combined leave durations.

Three-tier wage replacement formula

Your weekly benefit is calculated using three tiers: 90% on the lowest band of wages, 66% on the middle band, and 55% on the highest band. Maximum: approximately $1,372/week. This progressive structure ensures lower-wage workers see the highest percentage of income replaced.

Shared funding: 0.88% payroll contribution

The program is funded through a 0.88% payroll contribution split 50/50 between employees and employers. You're contributing to this benefit through every paycheck — it's there when you need it.

Broader family coverage

Minnesota PFML covers leave for your spouse, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, and other family members as defined by state law. Federal FMLA only covers spouse, child, and parent.

New program, full benefits

Even though PFML just launched, the benefits are fully operational. You don't need to wait for the program to “mature” — if you qualify and need leave, apply now. The three-tier replacement and 20-week combined cap are already in effect.
